Hey, it made me go, "Hunh?" Thought someone else might have seen it too.

Just to reiterate what Jediknight36 noted..."On the plus-side, low exhaust emissions earn the fortwo an Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (ULEV) classification." This comes from the "Green Car" posting online. To give that some perspective, only the hybrids get a better rating.(Advanced Technology Partial-Zero-Emission Vehicle (AT-PZEV) rating, which is the most stringent emission standard achieved by a gasoline-powered vehicle in the U.S.)

In addition, I am very impressed with the "Green" attention to the entire production process of the Smart Cars. Environmental impact during manufacture is an important factor to consider along with mileage and emissions.

PS

I am currently driving a Honda Civic. However, it's lease will expire in Nov '08. I am on the waiting list for a Blue and Silver Passion Smart. I haven't been this excited about a car since my '68 VW Beetle.

Thats good and all, but shouldn't the smarts have gotten a better rating than the average car, especially if it is ULEV?

See if this sounds like a good excuse...
One measure (graph in picture) will be parts per million -
that would mean the engine isn't the cleanest.
and the other (AT-PZEV) based on grams per mile -
this means the engine is so small, the weight of the pollutants is very small.
(this was done with no fact checking or research)

The EPA Green Vehicle Guide shows two ratings for pollution. Smog Forming and Greenhouse Gas.

The smart has a Greehouse Gas score of 9 with 10 being best. But an Air Pollution score of 7 with 10 being best.

It is surprising that the pollution score is higher than many other cars, but still very low compared to most cars on the road.

Check out the website and see how well the smart does overall.

BTW - smart is listed under Mercedes-Benz

It actually does astoundingly well for a non-hybrid. I was curious about this a month ago and did some digging around ...

Fortwo: Pretty darn green
