uncomfortable seats?

I just got back from a quick trip to Europe and figured while I was there I might as well rent a for two in order to get some more seat time. Speaking of seats thats my biggest complaint. I am 6'3", 185 lbs and my butt went numb pretty quickly. There doesnt seem to be much padding. Are the leather seats any better?

I rented a 2008 Passion model, here are some of my impressions. I spent about 4 hours in the car driving in and around berlin with a few trips on the highway.

Considerable amount of engine vibration at idle. Can be felt in your butt. I suppose it's due to the 3 cylinder engine.

You will get used to the tranny. It shifts the quickest in Auto mode.

I kept forgetting that I was in a tiny car. It really is very spacious inside.

While its no rocket, performance levels are adequate. High speed passing and freeway on ramps are a separate issue.

There is massive understeer, which is somewhat scary. If you take a corner too quick or need to make an emergency maneuver the front end just pushes. The fact that the roads were wet didnt help at all.

Driving in the rain will have you throwing rooster tails becuase the rear tires are pushed so far back. Its kinda fun to to watch. It reminds me of the old Yamaha waverunners that used to squirt a stream of water in the air.

I would opt for the power steering. While not necessary, the steering stiffens up quite a bit during evassive maneuvers or spirited city driving.

Parking is a breeze. Perpendicular parking is super cool.

Some pics fr your viewing pleasure. Full album here

if you didn't see the cut away smart at the summer road test, the seats only have a one layer foam insert for padding, bottom and back rest . the foam rubber (depending on ozone in your area) will probably start oxidizing and breaking down within 2-5 years. the leather seats are just leather covers over the same seat cushions and frame.

hmm...I wonder if there are any aftermarket options available?

THe seat issue has me looking much closer at the new 2009 Honda Fit. While it wont have the novelty factor of the smart it is a better value.

I have leather seats. They seem to feel just like the fabric ones, in terms of support. However, I find them extremely comfortable, and others have commented the same to me, even over long driving distances. We have had luxury cars with marshmallow seats, as a point of comparison, and I find both the smart's seats AND the seating position extraordinarily good. I was surprised to read your concern, because the seat comfort was about the first thing that delighted us when testing the car. They have not disappointed us!

it could be a combinaiton of the seat height too. THe seat is relatively close ot the floor forcing me to extend my legs out instead of down. I of course had the seat all the way back too. Leg room was not an issue.

well forget the aftermarket, since it seems that side airbag is seat mounted.

Although I personally would not do it, a pair of MOMO or SPARCOs would be nice.

Are you listening seat manufacturers?

Not many posts about the seats being uncomfortable - more the opposite. However, any good car interior shop should be able to add extra foam padding, where and if needed.
