Upgrading a smarts software by phone?

So here is a question I've pondered for quit sometime.
Why hasn't someone come up with an adapter of some sort that could be plugged into a smart (or any other car) that could then be plugged into a computer or modem and have upgrades downloaded from smart.
My friend hasn't had the most current software upgrades because we live 600 miles from the nearest dealer.
Would be great if a car died and were miles from nearest dealer it could be plugged in and a smart dealer could then use smarts fancy software for diagnostics or upgrades.
Dealer could still charge for services.
Here's a chance for someone with some computer savoy to make some money.

I dont think an adapter is needed. They already have those plugs. I think its more of the software that would recognize the smart.
