USA smart vs. rest of the world.

AHH damn posted in the wrong forum to... sorry

HI, my girlfriend will prob be getting a 08 smart at the end of summer, i have been doing some research on them, and i am curious to why.... the one we get doesnt even come close the mileage of the ones the rest of the planet gets???

i know one is diesel, and we wont get that mileage, but even the gas engine gets what 10mpg more that the US version?

thanks for any info you can give me.

and has anyone done anything to get more mpgs out of their smart?? exhaust? hi flow filter? engine tuning?

thanks again

I'm not sure what countries yu are comparing to, but if it is the UK you have to remember that their Gallon is 20% bigger than a US Gallon. Also each country has it's own standard test for measuring consumption and the results between them can vary quite abit.

The US test just changed to 2008. The fortwo gets 32/41 under the new method, but 40/45 under the 2007 method.

Aside from different measurments you may also be looking at the 61hp, which isnt offered here. But it would be a dog here and just to achieve so-so perfomance would likely kill the mpg advantage it has over the 71hp version we get.

And our lovely E10 gasoline kills mileage to the tune of about 10%..............
