III see.. well I only ask because it was as though you were reading a transcript of the past 2 years of my life (obviously much more condensed and minus a few of the places you named) none the less, exxxxaactly! the same...
so back to the fuel issue.
to sum it up for my poor little brain, and the health and well being of my future adoption, is the conclusion of High Grade vs. well, anything else, that High grade is an absolute? and without drowning thru the solar panal responses could someone please express what the potential adverse outcome may be if one were to do something as horrible as to feed their 'baby' 'Dollar Tree Steak'?

You can't do any more than tell them, you have to let them grow up making their own mistakes.

I feel too good about my smart to not feed it 92 and up. Now it's on a Shell 93 V-Power binge which strangely is the cheapest among brands offering 92 and up gas in my area.

To put it in perspective, Costco in Atlanta had regular for 3.95 and premium for 4.25 today. If your tank was totally empty the difference is $2.61. It's less than a value meal at a fast food restaurant and probably money well spent to follow the manufacturers recommendations. Pretty much if they say use regular, I use regular. If they say use premium, I use premium. The engineers know how the car was setup and I think I'll go with their judgement. Now, if its just the principal of the matter with you then use regular or mid-grade. I have a friend that does this in their car (a Lexus hybrid), they get worse gas mileage doing it.

I'd bet the dealer is saying that mid-grade is ok to calm those that think all cars should take the cheapest gas possible.

As some may know, the Euro Owners Instructions include information that we in the US are apparently not to be entrusted with. The fuel information is more specific than just using 91 octane fuel. The Euro recomendation for the 451 is to use a minimum of 95 Research Octane Number and 85 Motor Octane Number. That corresponds to 90 Pump Octane Number by (RON+MON)/2, one point higher than our common mid-grade 89 PON.

There is one thing I don't get though. The Euro recommendation is essentially 90 PON and the US is 91 PON. But the Euro engine compression ratio is 11.4:1 and ours is 10.0:1. If anything, the recommendations should be reversed.

Not advocating anything here, just putting up some numbers.

on regular gas?

I was not told (IIRC) to use premium fuel when I bought my Smart car. With premium at over $4 per gallon, it ads up even in the Fortwo. It seems to run well with regular gas.

What really makes no sense is that everywhere you look at the Mitsubishi 3B2 specs, it calls for regular gas with the exact same compression ratio. So who to believe, the guys who build it, or the guys who sell it?
