Yup, I have read that (the Mitsu spec) with my own eyes in a number of places. But I have also read with my own eyes that in Japan there are two grades of gasoline, regular and premium. Though they use the term "regular" there, they are referring to a high RON number of about 96, and their premium is about 100 RON. The approximation is, US Pump Octane Number (AKI) = 0.95 X RON.

A recent missive out of USMC Camp Foster, Okinawa (JA) acknowledges that there is a significant disparity between Japan's term "regular gas" and the US term.

Some folks believe in and buy Fuel Pills to put in your fuel tank that guarentee 3 more MPG. Many people bought those little magnets the clamp on the fuel line to in crease MPG. Some people buy the turbonator that claims to supercharge your car for $59.00 by swirling around the air before it reaches the combustion chamber.
What ever rocks your boat, do it.
For me, premium gas for my Smart rocks my boat, to each his own.
Penny wise, pound foolish may apply, or maybe not?

Different Definitions

The other Camp Foster info was that Army Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES) provides the infrastructure for private-use gas stations for all overseas services. To keep it simple, they only provide two fuels, and recognize the problems with similar definitions referring to different things. AAFES gasoline is all one grade - NATO Symbol F-67, unleaded 95 RON equating to 90 PON or mid-grade by US definition. The other fuel is NATO Symbol F-54 diesel (DF-2) for those lucky enough to be running around in smart diesels.

I do not remember if I received a reply. It has been awhile. I have asked other things and received a reply or was told to ask my local Smart center.
