I second what meat said. The car is normally the center of attention that normally has a head turned it's way. A good thief is gonna move on to a more subtle and easy target. Of course, there is always the amateur thieves - crackheads and the like. Most of them don't roam far from their neighborhoods - stay away from their neighborhoods and you're OK.

I've done the panic button at my wifes work. One day I did it while my wifes BIG BOSS was looking at the car with a few others. He was the closest when I hit the button. I was in her work and we were watching giggling up a storm. Only problem is the panic wouldn't go off as I needed to get closer to the car. I had to step outside to turn it off. He saw me and started saying he didn't do anything, I told him it was fine and headed back in. Later on, he found out I had been messing with him - this guy has no sense of humor so he now scowls when he sees me, when he was standing next to the car when the panic went off it attracted a lot of attention.

All great points! well taken!

I'm not too worry about break ins and theft of the smart.. thats what insurance is for.

I am worried about vandalism though.. getting keyed, having the smart tipped over, antenna broken off, etc... I will be less paranoid, but geeze if I walk out and see some high school punks sitting on my roof taking a picture , its gonna be pepper spray city. ;) ok jk kinda.

I'm coming from a slightly different direction (gee, Meat, really?); I've owned Hummers. I had a car torched at a dealership (Clippinger - arson fire). Hummers are often targeted by nutbags who key them, throw red paint on them, set fire to them, and (in certain cases) bounce off food group's grille guard when they make the mistake of believing that their 160 lb vegetarian frame will stop a 10,300 lb metal truck.

Bet they don't make that mistake again.

The mob mentality of liberals tends to make them attack inanimate things that they wrongly believe are bad to the environment, and that they believe won't fight back. The Smart certainly isn't bad for the environment. It's cute. I would sincerely doubt that your Smart would be vandalized by anyone except an angry clown.

Your pal,
Meat.

I was afraid to leave my baby for long when I first got him. The people that scare me the most are my neighbors who we've had problems with. I've learned that most people won't mess with my car more than looking at him and peeking in the windows. I've even had people watch for "the owner of that adorable/interesting/awesome/etc. car" for up to 45 minutes!

I wouldn't worry too much about vandalism. I doubt people would do it just because it's new and 'cute'.

The only people that gets their car vandalize are usually the guys that parks their cars sideways taking up two spaces so nobody would dings their doors.

Nope. I don't worry about it.
Maybe I should?

If I'm out during the day the smart gets so much attention that someone is bound to see if anyone messes with it. Not to mention anywhere and everywhere has camera's now. And around here many of the shopping centers, malls, and even the Wal*Mart I frequent has security guards. I know at the V.A. hospital that there's campus police and plenty of foot traffic. It's small enough I can park between 2 vehicles and not really worry about door dings. Hard to tip it between two vehicles. ;)

Sure would take a lot of the fun out of it if I was worried about tipping and vandalism all the time.

Now I have to agree with mmmeat. We also have a Hummer. I'd be far more worried about someone doing something to it than the smart. Also usually have to park away from others to avoid door dings. Plus the Hummer costs quite a bit more than the smart.
