VIN Explanation thread?

Hello! I have attempted to search for a thread that had been on the forum explaining exactly what the VIN means, broken out.

For example, the WMEE is the Smart brand, K is Cabriolet, J is Coupe, etc.

I cannot find this thread and I have attempted to search by all search terms I can think of (and I hate that I can't search by "VIN" btw since it's too short!)

Can anyone help me find this? Was it lost in the great forum burp?

Thanks!!!

VIN deatils

WME is the World Manufacturer Identifier (smart)
EJ31X or EK31X are the body, style and feature (K for cabrio, J for coupe)
? is a control digit to help programs verify that the VIN has been entered accurately
8 is the year
K is the plant (Hambach)
?????? is the sequencial manufacturer number, assigned globally, independently from specific destination's requirements

As far as I know...

This is wonderful. Thank you so very much. I wasn't positive what I had read and wanted to ensure it hadn't been muddled up in my brain.

(from CSC site, Mike T)

additional explanantion:

ex: WMEEJ31X38K123456

WME = smart
E = 451
J/K = coupé/cabriolet
31 = 70 HP engine
X = passive restraints
9th digit = checksum
8 = 2008 M.Y.
K = assembly building K, Hambach
123456 = serial #

I searched for "Decode" limited to 3 months and newer...got 4 results then looked at LOWEST VIN# Whats yours??? in Smart Car Reservations under Smart Car News and Rumors from 1-11-2008 started by thedefchef

That was the thread that every body posted how to decode the VIN in .....

This is not meant to say searching on these forums is easy.... I think I just got lucky because I remembered that there was a thread where someone asked how to decode the VIN...

Thanks!!! I never used "decode" as a search string.... and sadly I couldn't begin to remember the thread title.

VINs after 1980 have seventeen places. Each digit or alpha in the serial number means something. The first 10 give information about the car, the last six or seven are the actual identification number, differentiating it from other like models:
