We need a secret handshake of sorts...

Smarts are rare. We know this... but they're getting more and more common every day. We, as the early adapters, and enthusiasts, need to determine a cool way of saying hi to people in other smarts. I know from my brothers old jeep wrangler that do some sort of 2-finger boyscout wave at eachother. I thought he was pulling my leg at first, but by the time he sold the thing i swore it was in the manuel somewhere.

I've noticed that I get so excited when I see a rare "other smart" that i just start waving frantically. I was turning at an intersection the other day and a silver/black smart drove by and we both got so excited that we almost crashed into eachother! As people, we're way too suave to flail around like this.

Any ideas?

Well, I can agree with how rare they are! I saw one yesterday (only the second one I've seen since I got my car on June 20) and I beeped frantically! Maybe a specific # of beeps, like three to coincide with the number of cylinders!

How about the "A-OK" hand sign? The thumb and the index finger meeting at the tips to signify the smart symbol, and the three other fingers, naturally up there, to show the # of cyl?

I like this suggestion a lot! It's a fairly common gesture, but it's still secret enough that it wouldn't draw suspicion from those outside the 'club.'

That's a pretty awesome idea!
A great, easy to recognize symbol and a great explanation for how it fits with Smart cars! I love it! ^_^

Classier than just waving, and I'd be worried that some people might take beeping (especially multiple beeps to wrong way and think you're pissed off at them.

I'm totally going to start A-Oking other Smart drivers... er, that is, once my Smart arrives in a few weeks.

This thread has been done before but I can't for the life of me find it. It was something like The Smart Wave - one a lot of people liked was sign language for SMART. To me it looked REALLY close to "Loser" though or one fingered salute.

HERE is a link to it being done, I can't find the video site.

That makes for a great secret signal. How about the secret handshake? Perhaps have it start with the secret signal and have it transform into a handshake when one goes to shake the other persons hand?

okay... i dig it! I like the OK sign. Good thinking. Plus with this, less enthusiastic owners can manage the expectations of freaks like me that have named and personified their car. It's a mutual "hey- you have good taste" salute. It's visable from one car to another.

How do we communicate it to everyone though? Right now 8 people are aware of this... and we're all over the place.

I don't like the sign language thing as much. Looks too much like the jeep thing.
