I have a question I have been reading the threads and I keep seeing “451” I just picked up my Mercedes Smart car two days ago from our Mercedes dealership who has a "Smart Center" I understand that some are referring to it as a "Damler Smart" I understand why we all choose to call ours little Smarts as we see them, but where is this 451 coming from?
When smart became an total part of DaimlerChrysler (now again "Daimler")
the Type Numbers got the same systematic as the Mercedes Cars.
So the original smart got the number 450 C450 for Coupe, A450 for the convertible. So the new Model started in 07 is the 451, again C451 for the Coupe, A451 for the convertible.
The letters represente the Type of car, the numbers ar set for a Model.
So the next smart will not be the 452 because that was allready the smart Roadster
The original design came from a collaboration between Swatch and Mercedes design group in the early to mid 90's. Mercedes created a satellite company to manufacture the car. Mercedes bought out Swatches ownership (I think about 4-6 years ago.)
Hmm looks like my question brought out some very interesting idea's. Thank you for the input. I should have said Amsterdam NY. I never visited Amsterdam (isn't that great City in Denmark?" Our NY Amsterdam is a great wondeful city but I am sure it won't hold a candle to Denmarks Amsterdam.
so does YOUR smart have Mercedes emblems on it? that would be interesting if it does, since Mercedes does not make the smart, Daimler does.
smart is to Mercedes as a Chevy is to a Cadillac. smart and Mercedes are both made owned by the parent company, Daimler. Chevrolet and Cadillac are both own by THEIR parent company, General Motors.
in other words, if you own a Chevy you wouldn't say you have a "Cadillac Chevy".......
smart is a product of the Mercedes-Benz Cars division of Diamler.

trivia: The top of the 450 engine read "Engineered by Mercedes-Benz"
Yup, but the engines were built by "SUPREX;" exactly who they are and where they were built evades me. It is hard to find out much about SUPREX other than they have been/are (?) in the aviation supercharger business (in fact, what became the smart 700cc gas engine has been used in light aircraft - but watercooled?). I think the smart turbochargers are Garrett! There have been some very peripheral hints that SUPREX may be an interest of Daimler or Chrysler.
