That would be cool; seeing a whole bunch of Smart cars racing around a track. I assume you meant other than having money to spend on it?

I'm independently wealthy (haha) so money is not an issue. (It really is BIG time).

No, my inquiry has to do with the technical aspects, what needs to be modded on the car to make it acceptable to race, like gas tank mods, etc.

Would the Smart need a roll cage inside it if a roll cage is built into it?

Duh!!!!

Wow, what a stupid idea, in the whole history of stupid ideas that is right up there with the best.
Who are you going to race against for a start?
It will have to be slow, underpowered, with too high a centre of gravity.
If money is no object, buy a proper track car and keep the smart for fun on the road.

track car is a broad term.
i believe the smart is already used in solo racing.
i don't think it is a serious drag contender.
smart competed in the one lap of america race.
it also won the canonball run 2008

as to it's suitability for racing - just about anything with wheels has been raced.

i think at minimum you'd want ECU remap, suspension upgrades, tires.... different sanctioning bodies might require other mods like fuel cells or cages or taking out the glazing or whatever...

To get a feel for what is involved with a proper, sanctioned micro-racer see the "Legends" at: 600 Racing Online Catalog and http://www.littleracecars.com/about_legends.shtml

Mixing hamsters and guinea pigs, would that make it a hybrid?
