What's the linkage problem about?

my yellow smart is on the way. I read the threads and find some are talking about the linkage problem.
what's the linkage problem about and look like? do I need to check anything before I sign and pick up the car? will the dealer fix it for free?

please give me some ideas.

Info is in all those threads; just ensure you have the dealer verify the shift linkage inspection was done prior to you taking delivery.
