The total area of the USA is aprox 3,537,441 square miles.
There have been 32,073 Model 451 smart cars sold in the USA.
That means on average there is one smart car for every 110.29 square miles.
You have to hunt for them!!!!!!!!
I don't know if you could bring some of them to you with some type of Bait. Maybe you need a Blind or a tree stand to get close to one.
I understand they usually are found as individuals but occasionally can be found in large herds in places like the Dells, Indianapolis, on Lombard St and in Orlando.
Also they are rarely found near gas stations and if found there are usualy gone quickly.
The San Jose (now Santa Clara) smart dealer says he has a list of 400 cars that are to get the 2.0 upgrade - so that tells me he sold 400 cars last year.

My town is so small we're not even included in census data and we've got 6 Smarts here.

Ohhhhhk. I suppose we'll let that slide then. Of course in our family, riding in the Smarts come first. Why drive one van/truck that gets 18mpg when you can drive two Smarts that get 40mpg!? That means we're getting 80mpg! (I'M KIDDING! I know the math, just wanted to make you think. )
Hubby and I just got back from Jackson MS, where they actually have a dealership. We saw 5 or 6 Smarts in the 3 days we were there, compared to the 3 or 4 total that are in the Mongomery area (closest dealership is Birmingham about 90 miles away). I have to admit I kind of missed the looks and questions I get around here.
Lets not forget.....the smart is really an urban car.
LA,NYC,MIA,SFO,SEA,DFW,ATL and my beloved Chicago.
Anywhere in between is nice but might not make sense ...esp if your local smart center could be 200 miles or more away.......
Let's see, that's a trip of 21 to 22 hundred miles, right? You saw one smart.
I've got just shy of 11,000 miles on my car ... let's say 5x the length of your trip. So far, away from dealerships and organized gatherings, I've spotted 4 wild smarts.
That's one for 2,150 miles for you, one for 2,700 miles for me. I think you're winning.
