10K and only 2 issues, at 1500 mi, P0441 secondary air injection fault. About a month ago, had to have my sun screen replaced. Overall, I am very pleased with my smartie! No regrets.

I must admit I'm amazed at the number of things that have had to be done to get the Smart Cars in perfect condition & hope these are a tiny minority. I rec'd my Smart Car 6/28/08 and only have 950 miles on it (waiting for a new sunshade that doesn't fall apart every time I try to use it & a minor part to help pull in A.M. stations. We've had all kinds of Toyotas for yrs (wife has 1 yr old Avalon & I sold my '99 SUV to friend when Smart Car arrived). We've NEVER had a problem of any kind with any Toyota and that includes our daughter's and son's Toyotas also. The minute I think I've bought another unreliable European "clunker" it'll be for sale over on Ebay. I was under the impression that the Smart Cars would be reliable & free of little picky problems.

I must admit that I first bought it to flip it. But since gas prices have dropped and are no longer fetching a $2000 premium, I now use it for promotional purposes. I have 1600 miles in 6 weeks and rarely open the sunshade - only to see some street lights. I don't have any problems, but I plan to drive it modestly and take this forum's advice on preventative maintenance. Today I bought a oil filter and 5W-30 Synth oil.

I have had several German cars and the worst was a Beautiful 2007 X5 4.8i Sport. It cost me $75k and had 4 recalls in 9 months, I sold it. If that was the BEST the German's had to offer, I don't plan on keeping this one for long.

In fact I am planning on selling it before the 2yr/24k warranty runs out and buy another one for 2010. Maybe by then they will offer a 5yr/60k warranty without asking a $1500 premium at the dealer.

X5...made in USA. One of the best America has to offer.

I will be banned for this one....

why did you use 5-30? the book calls for 0-30? thickening the oil past the manuf. recommendations may not be the best move imho. were only dealing with 3 cylinders. id do most any other mod before id do that. including the run on water thing. ive seen that done and it works. its in my future.

I did not read the manual and went on assumption since all other cars i have driven in the last 10 years are using a 5W-30. If this is an issue I can use the oil in my truck and will return to the store and get a "0" weight oil if I can find it. Just 10-30 years ago, 10W-40 was the oil of choice, it's funny how times change.

17,000 Km on our 2007 Passion 450 with no problems at all. "A" service was done at 15,000 Km, as required. The original oil was up to level and still clean. Our next routine service is scheduled for 30,000 Km. That will be way beyond the end of warranty, so we'll probably do it ourselves.
