The EPA mileage figures for the US version has not been released yet, but will be in excess of 40 mpg (so we are told) - and presumably that is the urban (city) figure. By comparison I think the euro and Canadian fortwos start in the mid to upper 40's urban, but I'm not sure. Perhaps someone can give us the correct mpgs, in coverted to US gallons of course! Hopefully there will not be a big difference when it is all said and done.
I understand that the reason the MPG will be different on the US vs EU models is because the US versions will have Japanese engines and not Mercedes Benz.
what eles are these engines designed for ? Are they well tested engine, anyone know?

Seriously, I don't know how long the new Mitsu engine has been in production in Europe, has it been a full year yet? Perhaps our friends across the pond can fill us in. In the past, Chrysler, and then Daimler-Chrysler have had several joint engine ventures with Mitsubishi and I believe by and large the engines have been good (Its the auto transmissions that have always been Chrysler's thorn in the side)
I can't confirm that my driving habits are typical but we've had a Smart Car for a year and average around 45-50 mpg in the city. We check it after every fill up. We've experienced a wide range between 35 mpg and 65 mpg -- yes, we did get 65 mpg but we consciously drove to maximize mpg to see what was achievable. Our dealer told us one of his customers called and raved about getting 70 mpg. Of course, this is with the Mercedes engine and, I think, the Mitsubishi engine will be bigger and if the car is larger and heavier that would have an impact.

They have the same engines, there will be very little differences between models...only the ones before 2006 have MB engines..
My avg. city is 43 mpg and 52 hwy. US gal. extremes are always possible but not in a practical way...
I sure hop that they come out with some numbers soon,, and they are good. 45 mpg for the Smart is not what I would call good. Because of their reluctance,, I darn near bought a new Accent 3 door yesterday. I need a car,, and would hate to do the wait - only to find that I am going to get a mere 45mpg on the Smart... I live in Florida,, flat land (no hills) and would hope to get much more than 45.
just depends on how you drive. If you're going to use you fortwo just to go down to the corner store or in the big city, mpg in the 40's is all you're going to get! Now if you do some highway travelling, then expect 50 - 60 mpg.
