Why do people lie about mpgs?

What MPG are you getting in the real world? - Toyota Yaris Forums - Ultimate Yaris Enthusiast Site

Why is everybody so competitive about gas mileage? Yesterday I met a man who looked me straight in the eye and said the his new Civic (NON-hybrid) gets 52 mpg consistently in city driving.

It seems the higher gas prices rise, the higher people report their mileage.

I'll bet if gas goes to $6.00/gal we'll see people in SUV's saying they get 65 mpg!

As I have said before.....the one good thing the Smart car did for America is raise the average mpg by 10-30 mpg!! Well....at least if you take what all the non Smart owners tell you after they ask what 'your little car gets'.....I get the 'my Honda gets better than that' all the time after I tell them my current mpg on the Smart......I think they are trying to convince themselves as much as anything!

People on that Yaris forum are getting up to 47mpg at highway...As you read down further, people are getting 35-40 highway. Now something doesn't add up here.

Last year I purchased a 2008 Scion X-B (same platform as Corola) after research through many different areas. the most reliable was "Consumer Reports" they have a real owners section feedback that was most helpful. By the way my X-B maintains 29-30 miles to the gallon 80 percent hi-way. A relative has a Scion 2 door coupe he gets the same thing. the Yaris has a different motor but should get 32MPG of course more on interstate.

I too was tired of all the BS about what every one says they get, they probably got that one time on a mis calulation( early pump cut off) and then think they get that all the time.......this is the MPG you need to know the average of 3-5 tanks in all driving conditions. good luck with your purchase, Yaris is basically a good car, another good choice is of course gasoline Civic

why not...same wide variance is happening over here, so why not with the Yaris? (my best highway is about 35 mpg!)

Could be, could be.... however I don't believe that the liars are limited to the yaris site or to a chance meeting with a civic owner over lunch..

Not to be flinging or flaming or defaming or whatever, but there have been a few outlandish mpg claims of this forum, too.

Are you kidding? My mother said her 74 cadiliac sedan devile got 35 mpgs! Whats more laughable is the fact that I know her carb wasn't even tuned properly. Way too rich! And she hasn't driven in 4 years.

No, the lies are there to make them selves feel better.

Yea I have heard of a 62mpg on here before... I have gotton a 52mpg reading before, due to an early click off. Otherwise I maintain an average of 42mpg. (Over 15 tank fulls)
