I feel many people are very diligent when they test their mileage on their new smart (or any car.) The only reason some get more than others, and of course others get so fewer miles per gal is so simple. YET no one will admit it to themselves (let alone to others)
FIRST you will get greater mileage driving at a slower speed. Those of you, who disagree, do your own test, drive over 200 miles at no greater speed than 50MPH then check your mileage. Drive it at 60 and you are going to see much less. Drive it at 65-70 and there you have the low mileage that you think is the HONEST GAS MILEAGE.
No one is lying; everyone is doing it differently, not only the speed but also the filling the tank for the measurement. I posted how I filled my tank and the people came out of the walls telling me how I should not fill the tank to where I had visual proof my tank was full.
I am sorry to have to break the news to those that refuse to believe, but if you do not visually see the gas in your neck, you WILL NEVER EVER, EVER GET AN accurate level to test.
We drive 95% city driving and depending on who is behind the wheel the MPG varies, my wife gets better mileage than I. (much better) I best I have been able to record is 52 MPG the worse has been 47 MPG yet so many in this forum can not get 40 MPG. I see where they ask why we are getting such good mileage or they just feel and of course say that we are lying.
It all comes down to one thing, how fast do you drive your Smart AND how you decide to check it. Frankly it doesn’t matter to me what people think when I tell them how high our gas mileage is, it only matters that I know and I am thrilled.
One last thought, on a trip to the Indy 500 my friend and I checked the mileage and at 75-78 MPH we got as bad as 45 MPG and as high as 47 MPG. But then I know for a fact there are some who will read this and say “He is lying” Fine, say and think what you want, It was our money, our time and our diligence that allowed us to get this information.
Reminds me of the story about a neighbor who, upon hearing time and again how another neighbors car was getting great gas milage, would pour two gallons of gas into his tank every night. The guy was getting 60 MPG and still had gas in the tank. After two weeks, he stopped and, as the story goes; his neighbor had the car into the dealership every week trying to fix the fuel economy problem. Makes me wish I had a neighbor without a locking gas cap!!!
A lot of people also often forget all of the little factors.....
These being AC on/off, cargo weight, outside air temperature, humidity, altitude, road conditions, highway vs city (overall speed was mentioned), braking methods, and the ability of the individual to keep from stomping on the accelerator.
I am almost positive that if I lose 50-80 pounds of fat that I can hit the upper 40's, but until then I am content with 41.
Not to be flinging or flaming or defaming or whatever, but there have been a few outlandish mpg claims of this forum, too.
It's the old YMMV thing. I got 55+ on one long trip with no A/C... almost all highway with few stops, some serious efforts on my part at hypermiling and a really nice tail wind on the return trip. A subsequent trip with the A/C on and my wife and a weekend's worth of luggage for two in the car netted me a still very respectable 41mpg. Around town, I "only" get low to mid thirties, but then again, I'm having LOTS of fun driving and still getting better than twice what I get in my pickup truck.
how much gas does the tank hold 8 + 1 reserve or 8 including reserve? I filled mine up as soon as the gas light came on (blinked) and it was an even 7 gallons. Trying to see if my sensor is off or not. Also where is the gas tank (off topic but just curious) located inside the car? Trying to figure out how to get an accurate reading.
I lie about my MPG's once in a while, because 99% of the time when I say "40mpg" people are like "oh.. that's all that small thing gets? I get that in my ______" - so I avoid the hassle from morons and reply "65mpg". It gets annoying.
Why do people lie about penis size? Same thing... Most don't know, or don't think you'll ever call them on making a number up.
Personally, I have mine up for the world to see. (Not that! My MPG! Get you mind out of the gutter!) You can not only see it quickly with an icon, but if you click on it you can see my mileage, gas fills, and dates I bought the gas. (Optionally I can show/record how much I paid, and where I bought it too, but thats off for me. ) So when I ask people to verify it, I'm not asking for anything I don't offer already.
