Saw the smart in Rome in 2006 and fell in love. I have never been much of a "car" person. As long as it got me to work without worry, it was fine. My husband has bought my last 3 vehicles because he just cared more than I did.
When I found out the smart was coming to the US I reserved the first day - 3/19 (my birthday is 3/20) and called the $99 reservation fee my birthday present to myself. After approximately 32 years of driving I have finally found a car that speaks to me. It was never the promise of gas mileage, never the promise of finding a parking spot; it's because I love it and it suits me. Sold the Yukon XL (much to my husband's dismay) and plan on taking a picture of it, sitting next to his GMC 2500 crew cab diesel truck (a dooley). I pick it up Thursday.
I pick my smart car up this comming saturday ,I saw the car 8 years ago in germany,right then I knew if it ever came to the states I had to have one ,don't get me wron I love my mercedes cdi ,but like most other people in this country ,I drive alone to work or the store,it will be the 1st car I've owned that will turn heads ,at least for a little while ,looking forward to getting behind the wheel
I've always had small cars; about the smallest I could find: Rabbits, MR2, Civics, etc. smart was the first here with the "city" or "micro" car (non-grey any way), so they got my money. I like a car that you wear and feel a connection to.
A co-worker brags that his Civic hybrid is bigger and gets better mileage. I tell him - If I could get a Crown Vic for $15,000 that gets 36 mpg, I'd pass it up for the fortwo.
