Garage
I picked up an orphan, liked it so much I decided not to sell the orphan once my order comes in (in a little over a month ). I've already got almost 8500 miles in almost 3 months of ownership so the second is a decent choice though one of my cars I'm selling get the same mileage - it's a diesel. I'll alternate but the orphan I will be doing some mods here and there to include a one-of-one paint job (hopefully) and the one ordered to my specs will stay mostly stock as I want to keep the yellow with red interior.

There is more than one driver in the family too but we already have 5-6 cars already. I guess the simple answer to the question for me would be, "Because I'm a car guy!".

Thanks for all your replies. I guess they are kind of collectible as they are unique and awe inspiring! My husband doesn't drive any longer and its just me, so one is enough for now, but yea, I wouldn't mind one for later in reserve!!!

Adopted an orphan. Kept original reservation and it'll probably stay in the family though not in our garage. His brother will probably take the one we originally reserved. Why? Because after we got ours he became interested. We'd already waited 11 months when we got the orphan in April and still had about 8 months to wait. No need to have him wait almost 2 years when we had one on the way already.

My husband fell in love with mine and wanted one of his own. We are a two car family and his is a huge diesel truck. With the price of gas, it makes sense to keep the truck for long trips and haul the toy trailer (which will fit a smart in it!) and drive the smarties to work and around town.
The money we save will make up for the cost eventually and we'll have something to show for it!

My response is similar to Angel. Adopted an orphan and kept the original reservation (DDE says Nov to Jan delivery) for my husband. Other vehicles are: 2000 F150 Extended Cab and 2005 F150 Super Crew. It is very seldom that there are more than 2 of us going anywhere at one time, so the 2000 will probably go (if anyone will buy it) and we'll keep the 2005 for 'family driving'.
Can we afford it? Well, that's for us to decide.

If I did really well financially this year, I'd consider getting a 2nd orphan -- just to have in case I need work on the first one... and that's fairly likely considering that, like an earlier poster, I commute a LOT. I've had my smartie since May 9 and have put over 8k miles on it, so there is a chance I'll drive it 50k miles a year. A 2nd smartie might be a good idea for me!

Then there's my daughter -- she's turning 13 soon, and before ya know it, she will be taking driver's ed. And my wife loves the smartie, so two in our family might not even be enough in the long run.

"Why multiple smarts?"

well, in our case i want one for me to use for my 70 mile round trip to work each day. my wife would use one in her daily business, running errands, picking up and delivering....etc. we'll keep our Jeep Compass for long trips where we need more room for 'stuff'.

we hope that the wife's smart will be an 'ev'.....we're placing our reservation next month in hopes they will be available in 2010.
