The MPG gods have been smiling lately or I haven't been running the AC as much! Almost hit 50 mpg on the last tank that covered a longer trip on the WV back roads, but had to settle for 49.7. My last 8 tanks average out to 46.4 mpg. I also came close again to 400 on one tank, but went ahead and filled up at 391 even though I had .5 gallons showing on the gauge.

The car seems to a) really like Amoco Ultimate 93 with no ethanol that I can tell, b) less AC use - duh!, c) two lane as opposed to highway. I can opt for highway or two lane for about half my commute and I typically take the highway during the school year, but I've found a window of time where the buses are not a problem and have been sticking to the two lane for 85% of the commute with pretty good results.

I know unicycle and others have done much better, but it's nice to finally be in the official '400 club'.

Did you put sliding floor on the smart so that if you need to push to save gas you help with you feet...just joking...

Between two cars I've had 159 fill-ups and only broken the 400 mile barrier once. I've averaged 316.3 miles per tank at 42.6mpg on one car and 310 miles per tank at 40.5mpg on the other.

It really is hard to hit 400+ miles on a tank under normal conditions, in large part bc it's tricky to time that 400th mile to coincide with a filling station. Today I filled up at mile 394 just after the gas gauge had gone down to 1 bar (around 1.08 gal). I could easily have exceeded 400 again, and I considered going after my record (which is about 426) but decided to call it quits early (even tho I was in filling station heaven). I think I was headed for about 440 miles.

I'm jealous! No matter what I do, I can't seem to get over 29 lately. My car has around 4,500 miles on it and is 6 months old. I use premium always, of course. I think one of the biggest problems is the AC. Here is Houston in the summer, you have to run it--or die. My commute is 6 miles from my home to my office --city streets the whole way. Traffic lights the whole way. I'm lucky if I can get over 45 mph in any given stretch between lights. Any suggestion???

Yeah, Move.
You have the worst conditions. Short drives where the car never gets warmed up, AC on High, Stop and go.

The real sugestion is to get out and just go for a fun drive. Find a nice 2 lane road to no where and put on a couple of hundred miles. Rural country roads at about 55 are great for the MPG. If you can run the AC at less than Max then the car doesn't realy care at those speeds.
