Makes one feel like we are beating the system.
One cautionary note, when you run the tank down that far, you pick up all the bad things in the bottom of the tank, such as water, sediment ect.
Possible fuel filter issues down the road.

I've taken the tank to 0.0 or 0.1 a few times, and once went to -0.1 (go figure). My car still gets about 49 mpg after 55,000 miles. I'm not sure I've had any filter issues, but it seems like no.

You're just about at the BIG $$$$$$$ valve adjustment maintenance

Ouch -- the 50K maintenance was pricy enough at about $420. In fact, I thought the dealer rep told me that the 60K wasn't as bad...except that I need new tires, front and back.

$420 for a 50K maintenance? Just what exactly do they do?

I'm not at liberty to say, but I'll divulge that it involves a hot tub, some champagne, and party hats.
Back to the thread: I think I've gone over the 400-mile mark just under 20 times, or once every 8 tankfuls (with most of them recently, or about once every 5). The number could be a lot higher except for the distances between stations. In order to hit 400 miles, assuming 8.5 gallons (leaving a small amount in the tank), you'd have to get a bit over 47 mpg. Since I'm averaging 49 these days, I'm always up in the high 300s or low 400s. If I could time it right -- or if I bothered to take along an extra gallon -- I could probably hit 450.

Hey take an extra two gallons and you would get 500 mile tank
NeonSpinnazzz, depending on the climate where you live, it is not a good idea to leave the tank under half full. This can invite condensation inside the tank. Especially in the winter.
During the winter months, you will want to top off the tank before letting it sit for the night. Water in the fuel tank = less gallons of fuel the tank can hold and the potential for problems later on.

or is that cheating
Cheating! But actually, I meant that if I had a spare gallon just in case, I wouldn't have to worry about running out, so I could drive till 0.0 just to see how far I would get, and I think I'd hit 440 or even 450.
