It's a manual transmission--clutch fully engaged. If you let off the gas on a manual without pressing the clutch, the transmission turns acceleration into engine braking, sometimes harshly. But at 5-10mph stop and go, I also wish it could go into neutral instead of doing that, if it could be done without stressing the clutch. The shift program would have to know your next move... i.e. will you need forward power in the next 5 seconds? A "coast" button on the floor or shift knob would be great, if it could be made safe and idiot proof. I wouldn't want the car shifting to neutral by its own decision unless I was obviously stopped, as it does now. Computers can rarely out think the human in all cases.
