Would it be hard?

I've never had an experience with Manuel Shifting Car before.

And I know Smart Car is not full Manuel Shifting but semi-manuel shifting.

Would it be hard to learn to use this semi-shift gearing?

If it is... how long did it take for you to learn to get a hang of it?

If you have ever been in a car with manumatic, then this is pretty much it. Its more "pure" then those automatics with software though in that when you shift it, there is actually a a clutch doing it. but if you can tap a shifter knob forward and backwards, thats all the skill you need.
You will need to get used to it not being as smooth as a traditional automatic, but thats to be expected because it really is a manual.

no pressure.
use it in full auto mode, "D".
when or if you want or need to drive in manual, it's pretty easy to understand. the computer downshifts for you, and puts the car in first gear when you stop, etc. generally speaking the computer will keep you from hurting the engine while you get more comfortable with the transmission, and while it gets more comfortable with you.

No just drive it like an automatic. It will take a bit of time days to smooth out and then it will work great for you. My spouse has never driven a manual and gets along just fine with it.

There's a discussion of "how to" with opinions on the manual side operation under the forum operation and maintenance with the title

Shifting ?

Just put it in D and Go! The car wil shift for you. Don't move the accelerator pedal as the computer takes care of that as well. The most fun I have ever had in a car....well kind of!

My husband has never driven a stick (well, once, and it wasn't pretty!)

He tried the paddles in my cabrio and could immediately do them reasonably well, but preferred D.

When he got his cabrio it has a tach, and now he only uses the paddles, and loves them.

They are so simple to use, you're going to be pleasantly blown away.

If my $&*# remote were that simple, I could watch TV once in a while. It's just mortifying to have to go and ask a kid to turn it on for me......

The Smart 'manual' mode is super easy....the dash even tells you when to shift and the car will downshift at stoplights for you. Either mode is good....Manual mode great!
