I guess to us, it's no big deal. We only plan to use our SMART as local transportation for my wife (a rather cheap way for the wife to get to and from work). We will probably be a touch over three hours from the closest dealership (Jacksonville, Florida I think), so if it goes "down", I'll load it on a trailer and haul it there (or to a junk yard...depending on the mood at that time).;)

My opinion

The only way I would purchase it that far away is if it were a second or third car AND I had spoken to a local reputable shop that felt comfortable servicing and repairing the car. I might end up paying for some warranty work, but would know I could get it repaired if needed.

Yes, I know the shop may not have direct experience, but if they already serivce foreign makes...and they have a good reputation they should be able to do the repairs.

Wow. My dealer will be 6-8 miles away, and I had to think about whether that was too far away for service work with an unknown car. I'm assuming normal drop off, get to work, pick it up after work, get home service. That's a hassle to get across town to accomplish.

3 hours from the nearest dealer? You're a braver soul than me.

Ahhh, be brave! Like I said, my nearest dealer will probably be about 5.5 to 6 hours away. I'm confident. Hope smart doesn't let me down.

The thing with me is that I can probably handle most problems myself. Have a 2006 Honda Ridgeline that I bought new and my wife has a 2005 Chevrolet Equinox. They don't go back for service, I can handle that myself including minor repairs. I realize some can't or don't want to and I understand that but it is usually relaxing to and for me. Now where is that #*+^$??? lol;)

3,5-4 hours from my dealer. No one has ever accused me of being normal when it comes to cars!

I'll be driving the same duration to ABQ as you for service (from the opposite directions). Unfortunately, I'll have to go to Denver to pick up the car, because ZIP code seems to trump convenience in dealer allocation.

We should form our own South Western Chapter...
