Regarding 1 year / 10,000 mile wrench:

For somewhere between $50 and $250 your local dealer will gladly make that wrench disappear.

10k Service Cost?

It does appear that with some tenacity, smart DIY folks have prevailed using the instructions provided by JW - FREE IS GOOD!

Beginning with the month prior to our one year anniversary we had the wrench with "-1". It seemed to ratchet up by one digit with each subsequent start until we took it in for dealer service - NO FIRE just "big brother" smart looking out for us?

Top back, gotta go!

Just printed out the suggestion posted from your linkable thread and going out to give it a go.
Does say it may take 4 tries to get the timing quite right but I'll be back with my findings shortly.
Thanx MB DNA

What time is it when your clock strikes 13?

Sounds a bit lemony to me, but maybe it's just from changing the oil without resetting the car correctly. And changing it at 1000 miles? There are threads about that, but basically it seems like a waste of oil (and time). I've only ever taken my car in for service at the prescribed 10,000-mile intervals, and it's been great thru all 4 seasons and all 43,000 miles on it so far.

I'd still like to know: it's one thing for the car to know the odometer says 10,000 miles, but how does the little bugger know it's been a year?!? Does it keep track of the days without my knowing? If that's so, what ELSE does my "Smart" car keep track of?!? :O Waitagoshdarned minute... is THAT how those pictures of me driving him with no pants on ended up on the Internet?!?!?

While it's a WAG - I'd say "big brother" resides in the On-Board Diagnostic System Information (OBD II).

As to driving "smart"ly with no pants - TMI!

Top back, gotta go!

as of 18:28, still haven't got it to cooperate and go away.
I called the dealership and the mechanic said that's the way they reset it, but it could take upwards to 10 times to get it to reset.
Done that, still not going away.
Maybe I'll try again tomorrow when the moon is in another orbit.

The instrument cluster does contain a clock. It can do a lot of things without you knowing!

So it must be counting track of days without telling us.

I nervously await a gleaming red light on the dash and, "Good morning, Dave," in a calm voice...
