I've driven stick shifts before. I drive my smart in D mode pretty much all of the time. Fortunately I have no problems with forgetting that I'm in auto and try to shift it manually while in auto mode.
The only thing I'm afraid of is when in manual mode, if I need to step on it to get out of the way, and the car downshifts leaving me a sitting duck.
To me that's acceptable and expected in D but in M, I want more control. If I want to downshift I decide and have total control with the paddles or the shift knob.
I ignore the arrow, that is there for those that never have drivin a manual. If you have driving a manual, then you know when to shift from sound and feel. Which for me, depending on mood, is anywhere from 3.5k to 5k tops,
My 2 other cars are a 93 Acura Legend coupe 6 speed w/ 230 hp and a 90 Acura Legend 5 speed w/ 161hp. I'm a manual driver by far and I LOVE the smart implementation of things.
