prepping a usa smart for canadian inspection

hi, i have a 2008 model 451 passion and looking to bring it in with me to Canada... I understand there are some modifications that need to be done to pass inspection, such as...

. speedometer that reads kph (my Pioneer AVIC-Z3 does, hmm)
. daytime running lights, required?
. any other odd safety requirements, bumpers, lights, etc?

What about mods (I have a Doug Thorley header and exhaust, hehe.. and dealer-installed HID's)

Thanks in advance,
--Christopher 'StarLord'

For the Speedometer, Cube made a template for one (It still had mph) but you could add kph to it from the template in any image editor. He has the full instructions!

I don't know other things you would need to do, but at least you one solution.

Thanks Jefferios! I downloaded the template and notes from Cube's website at Smart Fortwo Custom Speedometer Face -- Since I am quite good with photoshop this will work well. I can mod the template to include KPH at the right spots and call it done

Is this a permament move?

Hi Timo!

Yup, permanently relocated in Alberta (as permanent as CIC and RIV let me anyway hehe..)

I found that Canadian Tire sells a oilpan heater which should work out well in lieu of trying to source a block heater (what? don't smart cars need a block heater for -30 temp starting? I know the engines are good.. but.. LOL!)

Yesh, the cold winter is coming, but I wouldn't go as far to say it was bigger than Lombard challenges teehee.. woo.. and we didn't even do anything BIG this year for San Francisco.. will have to get with Screaming Cow and do something HUGE again

Talk to your dealer. The DRL's should be a software thing, but it may cost a few Bucks.

Have fun with your speedo, But its not going to change your odometer, Does that matter?

woo long overdue reply, I must have missed the email from the forum here! I don't mind about the odometer/speedometer actually, I have KPH in my Pioneer AVIC-Z3 head so I am just reading it off of that little screen in the middle of the dash.. works well enough to keep me out of speeding tickets! ;) so far anyway... LOL... I haven't imported either of my cars yet, they are both registered California until I get CIC (Immigration) sorted for *me* though I did get an Alberta driver's license and working on switching my insurance up here (more paperwork, ugh!)

The DRL's, as far as I know, is indeed a software thing and costs around $60 for them to enable the feature... though I've done some research and it may be just as easy to attach some aftermarket fogs or other low-power lights and hardwire them to the ignition switch, which would basically meet the DRLs requirement for Alberta province.. Not going to worry about it too much yet, though trying to convince the fantastic electronics/lighting expert Larry (Screaming Cow/LittoDevil) to come up with some sort of kit for me.. hehe.. will keep everyone posted on that..

My son took a Nissan Xterra permanently to BC about 5 years ago, and is still driving it there. The only thing he had to do was have it fitted with DRLs. Otherwise, it is the same as was bought in the U.S. Messing with the odo and speedometer wasn't a requirement.
