I know it doesn't apply here, I was simply responding to 'they probably made up the difference in the price!' with the advantages of the other cases (and actually we have gotten some discounts/goodies thrown in with other new 'hot' car purchases; in any event being able to chose your dealer is a key benefit for other reasons too..).
Basically we are saying the same thing, it is a random charge that is "just one of those things"

And to the OP, not the same as dealer prep, aka mostly inflated bogus rip off, fees
