Ohhh, the weather outside is frightful,
And I can't take one more biteful-
The pie in the oven is done - I know:
Let it go, just say no or I'll grow...
But the wind's still fierce and screeching
And the aroma's SO beseeching
Umm, the whipped cream's oh so sweet
On the pie, on the place, it's complete.
When I take that first bite
And savor each flavor by the fire,
My sweats stretch to fit just right-
Who cares about the dang spare tire!
Yes the fire's slowly dying
And my willpower's done with trying
But as long as I love pie so
This I know, can't say no, give me more."
Deck us all with Boston Charlie,
Walla Walla, Wash., an' Kalamazoo!
Nora's freezin' on the trolley,
Swaller dollar cauliflower alley-garoo! Don't we know archaic barrel
Lullaby Lilla Boy, Louisville Lou?
Trolley Molly don't love Harold,
Boola boola Pensacoola hullabaloo! Bark us all bow-wows of folly,
Polly wolly cracker 'n' too-da-loo!
Donkey Bonny brays a carol,
Antelope Cantaloupe, 'lope with you! Hunky Dory's pop is lolly gaggin' on the wagon,
Willy, folly go through!
Chollie's collie barks at Barrow,
Harum scarum five alarm bung-a-loo! Dunk us all in bowls of barley,
Hinky dinky dink an' polly voo!
Chilly Filly's name is Chollie,
Chollie Filly's jolly chilly view halloo! Bark us all bow-wows of folly,
Double-bubble, toyland trouble! Woof, woof, woof!
Tizzy seas on melon collie!
Dibble-dabble, scribble-scrabble! Goof, goof, goof!

My sister and I (and we're close to 70) go through that routine every year at Christmas, creating a great deal of embarrassment for our children, though I don't think we ever get farther than Boola Boola Pensacoola Hullabaloo! There has never, ever been another comic strip like Pogo - or another cartoonist like Walt Kelly.
For those of you who are young, go to http://www.pogopossum.com/index.htm to acquaint yourselves with Pogo.
<laughter> Oh, who cares if we can't carry a tune in a bucket! Sing! Besides, it was fun to write.
POGO! Ah, yes. My Mother (now past) scandalized my Grandmother (her Mother) with that jewel - and poor Gram was so dismayed when the kids learned it. Years later, she confessed, she secretely had great chuckles, out of Mother's earshot.
