After seeing about the Smart rally at the Pelican Pub in Pacific City last summer (which I didn't make, natch), my wife and I rented their banquet room for our 20th anniversary party, and we headed down there for the shindig this past weekend.
Friday afternoon, after getting into town about 3, we drove around a little bit to see what else was happening in town, then parked at the end of a street just before the turn down into Bob Straub State Park, at a spot where you can walk up over the dune to see the ocean. You can drive over the dune, too, to take your car up and down the beach, but I wasn't stupid enough to try that with my Smart. Since I just spent three months on crutches, climbing up over the sand with a cane was bad enough.
I was stupid enough to manage to park the Smart enough off the pavement that we were in soft sand, though. And after sitting uncomfortably at the top of the dune for a few minutes, then slowly making my way back down, we discovered we were in deep doo-sand.
We were royally stuck, with no traction going forward or back. Normally, pushing something like the Smart out of the sand wouldn't be a big problem for me, but with a knee out of commission, it was hard to get much traction. And my wife couldn't manage to push hard enough by herself.
Thankfully, a gentleman with a truck about six times larger than the Smart showed up and added his back to the process, and we got out. It's making me think a little less blithely about a trip into snow country.
Still, thanks to the folks who did the Pelican run this summer for bringing the place to my attention. It was a great venue.
