Won't shift out of Park.

Hi All,
The car has been hard to put into park lately. However it would not come out of park. Tried everything except a big hammer. Smart sent the tow truck. Hopefully it is on its way to Chandler, AZ.(165miles) as I type. Anyone else have this problem? FYI if you start to have to "play" with the shift stick, to get between gears. Take it in before it freezes up.

Use the "SEARCH" function above and you'll find lots of info on this.

It's a reminder to everyone though, that stiffness in the shifter is not OK and should be immediately looked into.

Rick, what was the build date on your car and when did you take delivery? Only reason I'm asking is this was "supposed" to be "cured" in the Jan/Feb 08 and later cars.

Stuck in Park

Search "Gear Knob Button Stuck" go to page 3, there are pictures showing how to get the car out of park. It works, I used it when I had a problem that resulted in the car being stuck in park.

I took delivery 04/04/08. I let it set in "Phx" for 2 weeks because could not go get it. Last 4 of vin is 7289. Car is on its way to dealer. Can't look at the tag on door

Thanks, I looked at "troubles" on the site but missed this one. Car hit 1000 miles after leaving son at school. Towed in at 1003 miles. Hope they return it to me. I don't really need to go to chandler anytime soon.

Yes, too late. However, Bob at Smart road side wrote up a Lemon Law report on the trouble while I was on the phone. It was in the Sam's club parking lot when it happeded... I would have tried this just to get it home. I will if it happens again.

Dealer claims going to lube cables ect. Is this a permanent fix?
