I think the reason the smart is advertised with great videos like this is that they don't sell as well as over in America, you guys are queuing round the block with wait times of about a year, so they don't need to advertise over there, I can walk in to a smart showroom today and drive out with a brand new smart Monday morning. They have sales lists of brand new smarts sitting in a warehouse, you just look for the colour and spec and once your insurance is sorted and the car is road taxed you can drive away with your brand new car.
We still get a lot of stick about our "stupid little cars" even though we have had them over here for approx 10 years.
I am surprised they don't sell like hotcakes over here as they are a great little car that are really cheap to run, and don't really have any competition, lots of little cars over here, but none like the smart.
You have probably guessed, I love my smart.
Yes, advertising is to increase demand and over here they can't meet demand now. Things seem to be falling off a bit, so maybe we'll get something similar on the Smart USA web site, which would help with a lot of the questions we owners get.
I bought "The Little Book of Smart" this week and have been reading a bit. I didn't know the UK didn't get the Smart until 4 years after production started. I'd have thought it would be a large target market.
The reason we got it 4 years late is purely because all of Europe drive the same as you guys on the right, so the steering wheel is on the lefthand side, and ours is on the righthand side as we drive on the left, so it took them a while to change the steering wheel over to the correct side, it's not just a smart thing, this happens to us all the time with other makers,
They did import left hand drives over into Britain for a couple of years prior to us getting the righties, I have a few friends who own lefties, but they did'nt become popular until they imported righties.
If you have ever tried to drive a car with the steering wheel on the wrong side for your roads, you will realise why they are'nt popular, overtaking is particularly dangerous, as you can't see what's coming.

Yea,
I know what are you talking about. I used to drive JDM Toyota Carina on the streets of Moscow. But I also did have fun with it too. I added fake steering wheel on the passenger side and have my Giant Schnauzer as a co-pilot. Scared the s**t out of the cop once.
Haha Cube, I like your way of thinking.
There is a famous magician over here called Paul Daniels, and he used to have a left hand drive car and He did the same as you, he fitted a dummy steering wheel on what would be the drivers side, and he had a full sized skeleton "driving" the car, it used to cause chaos on the motorways
