I've saw a 450 on Maui which had a Hawaii plate on it. What confuses me is I thought you couldn't have a 450 registered in the USA? The 450s here in Connecticut all have Canadian plates on them for that very reason. I'm wondering if Hawaii has some special exclusion to the EPA/NHTSA gods.

I really want a VW T5 California...they sell them everywhere including Mexico but you can't bring one to the 48 states...I wonder if I could register one in Hawaii. The whole 450 thing is a mystery and would love to hear a solid answer for why they can put plates on their 450s and the rest of the U.S. can't...or at least that's been my understanding.

G&K converted 450's to meet US specs and sold them legally throughout the US for several years. Their price was north of 25k.

A year and a half ago I was on Maui and when I looked for a rental car online, one company listed Smart. Turns out they were just around the corner from the hotel we stayed at, but there weren't any cars available. They did other 'exotics' so it was a premium price as I recall. That was before the US introduction, so they had to be 450s.

Next time you're on the mainland, put one in your luggage.

Just think how many Smarts could fit in one of the Matson car carriers!

Would that be carry-on

Would that be carry-on or do you think you would have to ckeck it.

I know it would't fit under the seat in front of you but maybe in the overhead.

If I were smart, I'd certainly not want to be doing business in Hawaii or in Alaska: warranty claims would be prohibitively expensive and a lossing proposition. I wouldn't hold your breath.

Well, it wouldn't be that risky to ship one to Hawaii warranty wise seeing how the warranty expires after 24k. Plus they seem pretty easy to repair with the exception of engine light sensors.

Interesting. I knew about G&K but I thought people were putting Canadian tags on them. I'd love to bring a VW T5 California edition to the states, but I think you have to pay the states to have it crash tested and go through the EPA. And I'd prefer a diesel model, and the U.S. isn't very diesel approval friendly.
