Please tell us more about the racks. Do you think they would work on a cabrio? Thanks! Sparky

Let's take this discussion over to the Yakima rack thread:

I just placed my order for Gidget's twin sister! Couldn't resist as she seems to have so much fun. Sadly my little girl won't have the bodacious rack that the Gidge has. You know there can be only one!

Wanted to say hi to fellow San Diego smartians... since I, too, now have a Gidget look-alike (minus the Yakima wig). See pics added to 'Got Mine' since the panel swap. Woohoo!

How far is too far?

I was curious to see how far I could go on this last tank of gas ... there's a thread in the General Discussion about the "300 Club" so I thought I'd see if I could join. Afterall ... Gidget's pretty lean-and-mean ... I've been averaging over 40 mpg so with 8 gallons, that should get me 320 miles, right?
So on we went ... doing our running around, a couple days with the racks on, mostly without and an even mix of city-hwy driving but nothing over 60-65 mph.
Saturday was going to be close ... I was down to the last bar and needed to get to Del Mar, then to see Steel (she says hi by-the-way ... more like ne-ee-ee-ey really, but you get the picture) and then down to Costco to fill up. If anyone hadn't seen the weather, it was 85 degrees on the coast and gorgeous out so the traffic heading into Pacific Beach (the way to get to Costco) was backed-up pretty bad. Uh-oh ... and I've been at 0.2 gallons for a little bit already!
Sit and wait or go to the next exit and back-track ??
.... hmmm ...
I've got momentum ... and I'm sure the next exit will be clear ... but then there's a little up-hill to go back.
decisions decisions ...
go for it !
swerve!
Back on the freeway and oh crap! The traffic opened up on that exit just as I whipped-out! bad decision ... I hope it wasn't a really bad one.
Down we go and I glance at the gauge as I'm getting ready to exit:

Sorry it's a little fuzzy but that says 0.1 gallons left! Yikes !!
Ok ... Costco isn't that far back and .1 gallons should get me 4 miles.
But it's really warm out and gas evaporates fast ... do I have gas, or do I have fumes?
and how far back was Costco ??
At the time I had no idea but I just measured it in Google Earth and it was 3 miles!
Well ... worry not my friends, Gidget managed to get to the pump safe and sound (I wasn't worried ... yeah ... not me ... nooooooo .... not at all)
Just how much gas did we take-on ?? See for yourself:

If I remember right, with the reserve it's an 8.7 gallon tank. I did top-off a bit though. That was cutting it close!
And for the big question ... just how far did we go on that tank?

Not too shabby ... huh? I guess we're in the 300 club officially now!
I don't think I'll go that far again though.

42.25 MPG.

Down to 0.1 gallon. You really were running on fumes. Well done.

Flower ... my name is Flower.

This morning was another gorgeous morning here ... though I probably shouldn't say that as everyone will want to move here ....
hmmm ....
ok ...
let's try this again.
It was a cold, dank, dreary day once again in San Diego. So dark ... so depressing ... it was difficult to drag one's self into the doldrums of life.
6 am
the incessant staticy crackling of the not-quite-in-tune radio/alarm clock attempting to rouse me from my slumber ....
(is it working?)

ok .. so it was warm ... sunny, no wind ... another crappy day in San Diego.
Today was exceptionally crappy as normally along the coast there's a little haze (marine-layer) that sits offshore even on nice days so visibility is limited to 10 or so miles. Not so today ... clear enough to see the Coronado Islands ... and more than that ... it was clear enough to see details on the Islands.
I've liver here all my life (we won't say how long that is) and I can't remember ever seeing details on the Islands without binoculars. Absolutely amazing.

(the pic is a little out-of-sequence so you'll have to bear with me ...)

So off we went to the beach ... heading to Del Mar to hang with my big-board friends like usual on the weekend. There's supposed to be a little pulse of a south-swell so it should be ok. Anything should be better than Saturday - it was really really small!
ring!
Hello?
It's Clay and he's already checking Del Mar ... and it's barely knee-high. That's smaller than yesterday and I would sooooo go back to bed if I had seen it! The boyz were going to head up to Terra Mar which is a longboard spot in Carlsbad ... not bad for big boards, fairly long rides but it's usually really slow. What the heck - I now have a full tank of gas, I'm already on the road, and my friends are fun to just hang out with in the water so up we go ... and man-oh-man was it small. So much for that south swell ...
We went out for a couple hours ... Gidget was gawked-over by all the runners and bike riders cruising by (it's a very popular area for that) ... I suppose she's getting used to it. We had one guy in a pick-up driving by on the way up ... he was really stoked and giving me all sorts of thumbs-up as his poor girlfriend was trying her best in the passenger seat to ignore him. (lol)
After the two-hour saltwater soak (there wasn't a whole lot of wave riding going on) we went over to the coffee shop for a little jo and bite to eat. I didn't realize it, but it was right next to the flower fields ... they grow tulips there of all sorts of colors ... I couldn't help myself but take a couple pics:

You can't really tell from the pic 'cause the flowers are back a bit, but it really is pretty. Something to see if you ever come to San Diego (and even if you live here!)

The racks worked really well although the board tends to lift off the front rack a bit. I need to use a regular hold-down strap rather than the rubber bungees I'm using now. Shouldn't be a problem though .. I'm really happy with them. I don't leave them on all the time, however because of the noise and aerodynamic drag.

Well ... that was the morning ... we went home, took a bath - not together! ... although I did get a bit damp. How is it she gets a sponge-bath, and I have to scrub myself. It isn't right. Heck - I taught the cat to massage my back ... I should be able to get the car to wash me. Maybe something with the windshield wipers ... (tee hee hee hee)
Off to meet the SmartCarOfAmerica friends ... and our first official get-together!

Gidget goes to Coronado

Lunch at the Prado on a Sunday afternoon.
Not bad .... not bad ....
It's not a horrible way to spend an afternoon in this miserable, cold, depressing place I call home. ;)

We met up at the Balboa Hospital Parking lot this afternoon ... that was a great idea because the main part of Balboa Park was jam-packed!

This lot is a little off to the side but is generally pretty open - we were able to all park together which was nice and then decided to take the bus service the Park has to get to the restaurant.
Well, at least that was the original idea ... seems a few others had that thought too so some of us decided just to walk over.
The Prado is nice restaurant ... much better than Tio Leo's if anyone went up there today - you're hangin with the wrong crowd!
We had 13 people show and they're all great. One of us (Vander, right? I always screw up names as GeneSD found out!) had his daughter and a friend of hers come along and film us for a mock-commercial they were doing for a class ... that was pretty fun setting up shots with them!

I wish I took some pictures at lunch to show you everyone, but I didn't ... but SmartShanna did and there should be some posted soon. Just look in the San Diego Chapter area or look for our pics on Flickr ... search for San Diego Smart and you should find the group. There's many more than I can post here!

The First Cruise

Lunch was great (as was the margarita!) ... we all got back to the cars and headed off to Coronado for a little cruise. Did I say how nice the day was?
Here we are heading over the Coronado Bridge onto the Island. That's Point Loma in the background. Sure is nice today! Great day to have a cabriolet .... too bad I don't have one though.

It was a lot of fun bopping around in our little "toy" cars ... once on the Island, we headed over to the Hotel Del Coronado ... actually, a little parking lot by The Boathouse restaurant. I suppose we should have gone to the Del for some more classic pics, but it was getting late in the afternoon and some of has had other commitments to get to.
Driving through the main part of town was way-fun. Lots of horns honking and people waving. There was even an SUV going by video-taping! Oh ... wait ... that's nscaler !! He's one of us - but just hasn't gotten his Fortwo yet.

Once we got to the lot, we posed for some pics, hung out and chatted for a little while ...

then ... we had a little more fun ...
There was a little turn-around circle that was just big enough for ...
oh...
say, six Smart Fortwos ...
and 'round we went ....
and round ...
and round ...
and around a few more times ... that video link above shows us goofing off. It's pretty funny really.
After getting dizzy, it was time to split ... off we went to our own homes and thus ended the first get-together of out "Smart" friends. Fun was had by all and I can't wait for the next get-together. Hopefully some of you other San Diego owners will see this and join up with us next time!

Here's the video nscaler put together. It's cute and the music suits ... Vander's daughter's one is going to take a while to edit though. Gidget is the dizzy one in the beginning!

Next up (unless something else happens) is the the Clean Car Show being put on at UCSD, starring your favorite Smart car (and mine!) .... Gidget! That;s on April 22nd so be sure to check back around then. Untill then, everyone have a great week and thanks for reading our little stories!
