I'm very sorry for your pain but at the same time happy that you're still with us to tell about it.

It's the kind of accident that gives me goosebumps; so many other cars would accordion in on the driver with little absolute protection from the doors. The other driver hit your axle - something that might not have happened in a longer car - and the square tube steel reinforcements in our otherwise plastic doors kept their engine off your lap.

I hope the pain abates quickly and the only thing lasting from this incident is the story you can retell and your appreciation for strong safety engineering.

Be well, be safe, be thankful.

Possible DUI in Carlsbad wrecks

A possible drunken driver ran a red light and struck four vehicles near the intersection of El Camino Real and Tamarack Avenue this afternoon, according to Carlsbad police.

About 4 p.m., the 25-year-old man was driving southbound on El Camino Real when he hit a vehicle broadside that entered the intersection with a green light, police said. The man's vehicle then crossed over into the northbound lanes, where it struck three more vehicles, police said.

The man, who was temporarily trapped in his vehicle, was taken by helicopter to Scripps Memorial Hospital-La Jolla to be treated for a broken leg and other injuries, police said. The other drivers were treated for minor injuries.

The wrecks caused major traffic jams during the afternoon commute as police closed several lanes to investigate.

I'm glad you came out ok although sore! My sincere wishes for a fast and trouble free recovery!

However I'm surprised the air bags didn't deploy. Did it have to do with the way the smart was hit (side), strength of impact?

Thank You for all Get Well Wishes

Thanks a bunch for all your thoughts and wishes. I'm not sure why they didn't deploy, It was a hard impact and my seat is all bent as well from impact. Waiting on info from Insurance and Smart. This happened in Point Loma off Rosecrans in San Diego. I'll post pics when can.
