it appears to vary between a couple hundred $$ and a couple thousand $$$ per year, depending on the driver, location and a host of other variables.
there are a few insurance related threads here, but they are only good as a superficial guide.
best bet it to get a half dozen quotes and then compare to others in your area.

I have Wawanesa in San Diego. I added the Smart Passion to my existing insurance policy for my 2007 BMW 550i and it only went up by $60. There is something to be said about how insurance companies really do screw the customers, however, because the insurance for my 2007 BMW shows as about $640 per year (down from $1120 when it was the only car on my policy), and the 2008 Smart is about $480! How does a $15.5K car end up costing as much for insurance as a $72K car??

I suppose the silver lining is that it only went up $60, not the $480 it shows in the breakdown...

Did you mean that $480 was your smart premium in addition to the $640 for your BMW? or was it just an additional $60 a month (which does not add up to $480 a year, rather $720/year), or you meant an extra $60 to the $640 BMW premium (total $700/year for both cars) .

Per our conversation, I was able to speak with a Travelers CSR and get a quote on the 2008 Smart FOUR 2 vehicle. One item that was missing was the VIN and type (PURE or COUPE). I used the PURE model which has a symbol 8 vs the COUPE model that has a symbol 13. With the correct items know we can get a final price.

To add on the car effective today it would be an additional $226.50 to the policy premium. Breakdown for the vehicle estimated 6 months if $352.

To add the car onto the policy, information would have to be faxed into Travelers for Special handling.

I live in NJ and currently have a 2007 Santa Fe with full coverage with Geico. The premium for 6 months is $632. I called them and asked what the cost would be to remove the Santa Fe and add the 2008 Cabrio. They said they coudn't give an actual quote until they had a VIN - but that preliminary results showed a $18 increase in the premium for 6 months.

I have liability only and pay $105/ 6 mos. Dealer thought that was a steal
