Because the water builds up the wiper tray and eventually makes its way through the poor seal at the top of the tray. The water drips down the inside of the car and onto the SAM wiring and this directs the water straight into the SAM. Water and electrics don't mix and the car starts freaking out and usually won't start. This then costs £600 for the SAM plus the price of labour and coding. Of course it doesn't take long for the water to get back in because they don't try and seal anything.

So "that" is what.

Of course they left the computer under the battery, but at least they switched to non-leaky top post terminals. ;)

I wonder if anyone thought to install a "drain tube" into the area the water pools up in.

I REALLY hope that this is true! They are crazy for not selling the roadster in the states. I would buy two in a nano second if they did, and I'm sure many others would grab one too. It would be like printing money for them, but then I guess they're not in business to make money or they'd up production of the Fortwo instead of watching people cancel their reservations

Well guys, if you got the hard top, the water leak is much less of a problem! And most people demanded a manual tranny for the roadster ( the auto mode has a mind of its own and in any mode, the gearchanges are quite long) and the only thing they did was tweak the electronics! But since mine is a roadstercoupe model I did not have any problems packing my things and drive for a month! The car itself is an awesome piece of work. And the best part is going more than 50 miles a gallon. (some people did 62 mpg) (Uk stats)

The Hardtops leak as well- live in a wet country and you'd realise that, - I have both soft and hard top.

The Wiper tray that Kane/evil was talking about, shouldn't fill up, there is a more than adequate drain at the bottom of it, it helps if the pipe isn't folded back on itself (some have found this after a service!)

The top of the tray itself can suffer leaks due to capillery creep, it was just a simple job to drop the tray apply sealant at join, lift tray and tighten, wipe excess sealant off, seal all screw holes and screws individually. - mine wasn't leaking and I am on the original SAM unit ( the car is five next month!) but while I was having a look around the car I thought what the heck it can't hurt.
