Looking for softest ride with stock wheels

I have been reviewing old posts for the last two days and just can't come up with a conclusion.

What I would like to do is keep my stock wheels, mainly because of cost, and find the tire that will provide the best ride quality on the freeway. I find freeway bumps to be nearly unbearable, especially when there is a passenger. I ride almost 100 miles a day, and any relief from the jarring of California roads would be appreciated.

In short, I think what I am asking is what is the tallest sidewall I can fit on the stockers, and what brand tire provides the softest sidewall?

Any other input would be appreciated.

Jim

What tire pressures are you using?

Sorry I should have mentioned in my post. I have been using the MFG recommended pressures as well as a little lower.

Garage
You could go with a softer tire compound but milage and tire life would be affected. Adjust your speed so the bumps occur with the beat of the radio.

Nice idea, but the roads in CA are so bad I would have to listen to techno music all the time just to drive the speed limit!

First I admit I have only driven smarts with the skinny fronts until I changed mine. I bought two new rear rims and sold one front wheel/tire and kept one for a spare. I also sold the two original Conti's. I installed four Michelin 185/60-15's and the ride is greatly improved. Remember increasing the diameter of the rim (16's-17's) and keeping the same outer tire diameter gives a smaller air bag to absorb road shocks. Use small diameter rims (I'd have bought 14's if I could have) and as large a diameter tire as you can find that will fit and that will give the sofest ride. These tires JUST clear the front inner wheel wells and the backs are fine.
There may be other tires that even ride softer, but my experience on dozens of cars and trucks is Michelins ride smooth.

Driving in CA while listening to Techno music? I don't see a problem with that

I'm still working on finding a spring supplier.
My prototypes are working better than stock but if made to my custom specs, will be better still.
Keep checking, I'll get them made someday.

Buy a Cadillac as a backup vehicle, for days your jolt tolerance is low.

I believe you will find that it is not the spring rate, but more the damping rate and the limited front suspension travel. The stock spring rates are actually pretty cushy, but they are restricted by the firm damping and the front bump stops.
