Jim,
One of the big tire service centers around here is good old Wally World. I have been in there with my smart wheels and sensors. And yes they say that these parts should be changed everytime. HOWEVER they have a book as thick as many small town phone books full of TPMS parts listings. AND NONE FOR smart CARS! - yet........that to me is one of the problems with these hairball ideas, rather than an evolved design that has common parts, it was forced on us by the Firestone/Ford deal and they are all over the place and we as consumers can't get them.....I have tried smart deales, MB dealers, Mitsi dealers, Wal-Mart, Firestone and NO ONE HAS THESE IN THE NASHVILLE TN area yet that I have found.
