Replacing front wheels/tires with rears

Has anyone replaced the front wheels and tires with the wider rears? I am thinking of this simple change in the hopes it will improve braking and handling. I am curious to see if others have tried this.

I am also curious to hear if this will affect the fuel efficiency.

Yep, I have done this. I can't comment on fuel efficiency though as new engines get more efficient as they bed in and mine only has 4000 miles on it.

Have you noticed any change in handling and braking. Any comment on benefits or unpleasant side effects.

Sorry about this tangent: "Only" 4,000 miles? I thought mine was fully broken in with 1,500.

I just did this, but haven't driven enough miles to fill up car yet. Been getting about 44mpg before. At the end of the week will post new fill data. The car drives a lot better IMHO. Not as squirrelly. Seems to make the bumps less noticeably.

I've posted on this several times. I drove about 1,500 with stock skinnies on front, then bought new rear rims. I am a Michelin fan for smoothness, ride, noise, very little balance needed, etc so I installed 185/60-15's. They are 1" taller and while that changed my speedo (so now it reads right) and to calculate the mpg I need to multiply by 1.056 to get actual distance, my economy is about the same. I record every drop of gas and for 3,600 miles my avg is 42.5 and that includes speeds to 85 on the interstate keeping up with the flow as well as driving in traffic in downtown Nashville. The ride is much better, the cornering is more agressive, there is a slightly heavier feel to the brake pedal, the 0-15 acceleration is a little slower (not because of fronts, but taller rears), mpg isn't changed. I kept a front for a spare since I think what smart does is totally out of tune with the US highway system - a bottle of goo and a powered bicycle pump - HA! The reputation for short tire life on the OE Conti's is very well documented so I expect much better life on these Michelins. Seems to me like a plan, but to each their own. I also know that if I have a wheel bearing, brake, hub, suspension, maybe clutch, trans failure that smart will tell me what they think of my idea, but hey, it's still a free world - at least until we get too liberal a pres.

^^^um... not sure what "too liberal a pres." means for our freedom... or has to do with putting rear tires on the front.

Have you done this yet? I think I'd like to as well...

I wanted to be able to rotate the tires and wasn't even thinking about the positive change it could make in handling. I was pleasantly surprised when driving back down interstate from getting tires changed how much better it handled at 75mph.
I've already rotated them once uneventfully and have yet to see the wider tires affect on handling on slippery roads....
