Studded tires

Anyone hear or know of any? Do you think they would work?

Unless studs are required (which they are to travel certain mountain passes, etc.), you should be perfectly fine using a quality studless winter tire. Many people here have chosen to go with the Pirelli 190 Snowcontrol which is available in stock Fortwo sizing front and rear, though I chose to go with the Blizzak LM-18's, which Tire Rack is offering in a slightly different but correct front size (145/65-15) as well as the stock rear size for our cars.

Heavy snow still has not arrived in NE North Dakota, so I have not had a real chance to drive my SMART in real winter conditions, but I can make suggestions about tires based on prior experiance.

I don't know of any "stud-able" tires available in the proper sizes. Studded tires did work well way back when, but that was before we had modern snowtires like the Blizzacks and Snowcontrols

They were also noisy and somewhat rough riding. Studded tires also reduced traction on bare pavement.

In addition, the states that allowed them, only do so for certain months of the year to prevent the increased road surface wear that used to happen when they were in common use.

In short, I would suggest the Bridgestone Blizzacks with the Snow Controls my second choice.

I believe that I saw that Continental also is now making an interesting looking snow tire now, but I do not recall the name of it right now and have no personal experiance with them.

Studded Tires

As far as I know, nobody makes a studded tire for 155/60R-15 (Front), and 175/55R-15 (Rear). I'm for studded tires due to the ice we can get in our region, especially in the Portland, Oregon area. Otherwise if you live in snow, I would think a good snow tire should work fine. Until a manufacture will make a studded tire for the sizes mentioned above, I'll just carry a set of tire chains during the winter months.
