I would guess as wide as you want. If you mean without handling issues or rubbing, there are several threads on tires and wheels.

I have 195/40-17 on 17x7 ET25 on front and 225/35-17 on 17x8 ET25 on rear with no rubbing, but the tire is close to the strut up front.
