Dealer fees..

What I am talking about is anything above and beyond MSRP, tax, title, license and destination charge.

From Highest to lowest dealer rip-off add on profit. Most are called "doc fees", some are called prep fees....even a notary fee!!!

Sure like that Dallas smart center has one of the lower prices as far as dealer fee's go.

Picked up my loaded white cabrio 19 April (13 months wait) and Jackie Cooper Imports Tulsa Smartcenter charged $149 "documentation fee". To be fair, I saved $600 on the financing by arriving preapproved from my credit union (6% at 60 mos) and asked them to beat that. They offered 5.9% and I countered with "I'd rather deal with my CU.", so Cooper came back at 5% through a local bank (branch here in OKC). Guess I came out $451 ahead (gee, that's the smart model #, coincidence or not?). BTW, almost 8000 miles now and ZERO problems with my ragtop!

Just a note for anyone taking delivery in Florida. Florida law is written to support the dealers. There is no cap on what they can charge as a documentation fee and by law it is non-negotiable. Below is a link to an explaination of the law but I would suggest potential buyers should think twice about whether they really want to pay a $500 premium to buy a Smart. I just took delivery in Orlando on Saturday 10/25, and yes I paid a $499 doc fee. I love the car but if I had it to do over, I would walk away and tell them to...you know what. That's the only way we are going to lower or get rid of this phony charge. If you are paying invoice or a few hundred bucks above invoice, that's one thing. But when you are paying full retail there is no excuse to pay a premium. So I'm a happy Smart owner even though my butt is still smarting. (pun intended) And I didn't even get kissed.

Just confirming that Edison NJ has a $249 doc fee. In my case, I didnt mind paying it. I'm not from their "area" so they wouldnt be making the extra 2% off my car. Plus, if they actually get all the state line crossing paperwork through my the PA DMV before my 20 day temp plate runs out, they EARNED that $249!
