True enough but at least we're not taking gas like some of the other states with their doc fees. If I was in one of those states I'd probably pass on the car in protest.
did you expressly ask the question about doc fees? if they are allowed and/or capped in your state, you should expect to be charged the capped rate. again, if you don't ask the question, you won't get the answer. don't ask if they are adding fees, ask what they they charge for "doc" fees.
whoa. that's way too complicated. the fee won't be hidden in the registration fees breakdown, we all pay those fees. it will be listed as either a "doc" fee or "prep" fee on your contract and has to be disclosed. i don't believe there is a car dealer in the US who doesn't charge a doc fee of some sort. ...
This isn't a "doc fee;" it is something in-addition-to, and will be openly and separately invoiced.

Yes I did. They are allowed but not "required" and the doc fee is capped in MD at $100. Their e-mail reply to me stated that they were not adding ANY additional fees or dealer profit just what was in my original post.

no disrespect, but you don't have the correct info. i just called that dealer for you and talked to the Smart sales manager. i asked her what they are charging for the doc fee. she played dumb and said that i would need to talk to the finance person about that and that she isn't in. i asked if they hadn't delivered any cars yet and she said 3, but they are still in the learning process. sorry, but i have a hard time believing that the brand manager does not know what their dealer charges for a doc fee. sounds like the ole' good cop, bad cop syndrome to me. especially since the Smart dealership is associated with a MB dealer. they would certainly be the same fee and all salespeople would know that fee. the sales manager in my dealer was very upfront and told me that it was $55.
do your homework or don't be surprised when you arrive to pickup.
the whole reason i started this thread was to try to help those who aren't asking the right question. again, if you ask if they are adding any fees, the answer will ALWAYS be no. they don't consider the doc fee an "added" fee, but a standard fee.

No dis-resprect but have done my homework and the doc fee is a standard fee. Here in Maryland it is $100 capped by state law and is not a required fee. Can't be more and can be a whole lot less if you are persistant. You can bet they'll try to get the whole $100 though. The people I feel sorry for are the ones getting shafted by unregulated document fees (extra profit).
Received an e-mail from smart of Chandler today, here is what Tracy had to say about this fee:
"These fees are the same for each and every customer, there is not adjustment made on the doc fee. I’m not sure what or how to advise you on moving your order since orders are assigned based on your reservation criteria."
I e-mailed her back and told her I would move my order to California, I wil let youknow if she responds.
Well as for my opinion. The dealer fees are there for all new cars. All the complaints are really moot. You pay them or you dont. Or negotiate some of the dealer add ons. When my car arrives, wheather it is in Georgia or I pick up in Florida, if the fees the dealer adds on are too much for me, I will just not buy the car. Simple for me. The fuel milage has not lived up to what we ALL thought it was going to get. There are cars now that get that mileage, cheeper or more expensive. Again if its too much I'll go look at an HHR from Chevy. Besides, I still have issues with France and there attitude toward us.

Reason: Feelings

Dealer fees are different for dealers in one state than another. Depends if the state put their foot down on these deceptive practices. So its not the same for every smart buyer. The rest of your post is sour grapes.

You may be correct on the sour grapes comment. There seems to be alot of them going on, on this tread and others. Like I said my opinion. Its a car not cant live without item. There is and will be more competition on this level. You pay the fees for what ya want. People paid the ADM's for the PT crusier. I wouldnt. Now the car is reasonably priced.
