How long before it goes to someone on the orphan list?
I haven't been checking my DDE or keeping up with anything involving smart, because - well, "a watched pot never boils." I got a call saying that the car should be here in 30 days. When I configured, my DDE window began in November.
I was just about to start putting away some cash for my down payment. I want a decent down payment, so I'm wondering if there's a standard length of time that the dealer has to wait before selling the car to someone on the orphan list. I'll be buying the car either way, but a couple more weeks for a heads up would double my down payment. Anyone know?

clarification on 30 days
Not sure if it varies by state (or dealer), but at the smart center I work at (Tyson's Corner, VA) the customer has 30 days from the date the vehicle actually arrives at the center?

That's exciting about your smart! Hope they give you time to get your downpayment ready. I have a question if you don't mind: our DDE is Sept. '08 - Nov. '08. Did you configure an '08 or '09 and what year will you be getting since your DDE was in the '09 time frame but your car will come early? We configured an '08 in Aug. and then they emailed us to configure an '09 a week later so I've been wondering which we would get if our reservation # (1315) comes up early. btw, we love Austin! My husband and I both went to UT and have 3 kids who did also. We're in Lufkin now and will get our smart at a Houston dealership, hopefully soon!

Thanks for the input - that's what most of us initially believed. Now we've seen some posts here saying the clock starts when the dealer notifies the potential owner the car is inbound. I like your approach much better.

ankat, my reservation number is actually higher than yours: 1433. I wonder which dealer is yours. I suppose it makes a big difference where the dealer is in terms of when you get your car. I imagine Austin has a lot of orders and that's why I'm getting mine so early. Mine is an '08.
I asked about the bike rack and it's still not available. I've been out of the loop for a while. I can't believe the bike rack isn't available yet. Oh well.
My car is blue/silver with a leather interior. I completely forgot what colors I selected. I must have reconfigured 5 times in 3 days.
I'm trying not to get too excited. I've got about 30 days left to wait.

We'll be getting ours from Smart Center Houston North on I-45. I've noticed that higher numbers have been getting theirs, but at least we're finally getting close! I hope we're not being put aside since we aren't in Houston, but maybe not. We are on the orphan list, but haven't been called. Looks like we'll get an '09 now -- Rally Red in time for Christmas!

After you have been contacted by such dealer to place your order, you will have 30 days to complete the mutually agreed upon written purchase agreement with the dealer.

I still have yet to see an order number anywhere. I have configured my smart for delivery on the 26th of Aug. So, Is it on the very first reservation that you did? or would of I have seen it when I got done configuration? Thanks in advance.

I believe your reservation number (plus your e-mail address, ZIP and Drivers License #) are used to identify your car - no order number as such. I didn't see any number on my configuration confirmation.
