Information on Extended Warranties & Costs

Out of all the folks that have gotten their smarts, no one has mentioned one word (that I can find) about the costs of any extended (longer term) warranties that may have been offered to them.

Any one with additional information, would you please help us that haven't gotten ours so we can try to have time to decide what we might do?

Really appreciate it.

Best to one and all,

Chassol

Actually, he may be right - I don't think I've seen any mention from new owners on this (lot of mention of dealer fees though!)

(I'm still thinking we should start a separate Delivery subforum here, to list anything associated with bringing your baby home!)

$395 for one extra year. I bought it. Also expect to pay $645 destination charge (on the sticker), dealer doc prep fees ($55 in California, $499++ in Florida) sales tax and DMV fees.

Not quite what I wanted to hear, but still it's not as bad as it could be.

3 year/36,000 miles - $395 = 1 extra year and 12,000 miles
4 year/48,000 miles - $695 = 2 extra years and 24,000 miles
5 year/60,000 miles - $995 = 3 extra years and 36,000 miles
5 year/75,000 miles - $1195 = 3 extra years and 51,000 miles
5 year/100,000 miles - $1595 = 3 years and 76,000 miles

I assume the "fix anything and everything" is 12 months 12,000 miles and 24 months and 24,000 miles and up is specific items and NOT "bumper to bumper" or is it?

Most "extended warranties" are transferable for a reasonable transfer fee.

A catalytic converter is:
Federal Emissions Warranty – Under the Federal Emissions Warranty, all emissions related parts are covered for 2 years or 24,000 miles*, with the catalytic converter and engine control unit (the computer) covered for 8 years or 80,000 miles*. These Federal Emissions Warranty provisions cover light-duty vehicles up to 8500 pounds Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR).

Again any lucky new owner - What is the "bumper to bumper" warranty time?

Again Thanks to one and all,

Chassol

If my A - guesses and B - figures are correct my fully loaded Passion will cost me:

2008 smart Passion 15,580 B
5 year/75,000 miles - = 3 extra years and 51,000 miles 1,195 B
Transportation 645 B
Docs Fee 599 A
TAX 962 B
TAG & Transfer 75 B
TOTAL 20,056

Expensive, yes. The other big questions are service costs (example oil change) and hourly shop fees. Some shops also add 10% for shop supplies used. Being MB I'm sure this will be high.

But if you get the level of service and no arguments on what you want the price MIGHT - MAYBE be worth it in the long run.

I fully expect gasoline to be at $4.00+ per gallon by the end of 2008.

Gas Price projections, Official Short-Term Energy Outlook report from US Government.

http://www.eia.doe.gov/steo

Of course, this report doesn't figure in any unforseen circumstances that could drive the pumps, like political upheaval in a major producer.

Transportation is actually $645. Your other figures are close to mine other than our California sales tax is much higher and your Doc fee (ie additional dealer profit) is outrageous! Mine was $55 (regulated by CA law).

Sorry if I missed this, but did anyone find out if the extended warranty has to be purchased now (when you buy the car) or can you buy it later (during the first 2 years / 24,000 miles)?
