If smart does not start offering other modles they are not long for the US. People who want them have them, are getting them, or can get them. The copies will be here soon with more dealers and a known name. I give smart, with just the fortwo, two more years then the dealers will be used lots. Smart will go the way of Yugo if they are not careful. I found an old article from 1985 about Yugo, talked about waiting list, demand, and how different the car was, early 90's it was gone.

They need to offer something different, but I think the difference they need isn't a style change (like a forfour). They need to bring CDI, MHD, or an EV to market, since that's where the major hold outs are. Just my 2˘

Yes I agree based on the reaction I get from people asking about my Smart. First they smile and say it is so cute. Then they ask the mileage. When I tell them mid 30's they say that is disappointing for such a small car. Getting better mileage is going to be a necessity to sell this car in the USA.

Daimler US sales decline 26.5 percent in June
13 minutes ago

NEW YORK (AP) — Daimler AG said Wednesday that combined U.S. sales for its Mercedes-Benz and smart micro-cars fell nearly 26.5 percent in June compared with the same month a year earlier.

U.S. sales by the German automaker totaled 16,271, down from 22,121 in June 2008.

The company said it sold 15,155 Mercedes-Benz vehicles, a nearly 22.6 percent decline from a year earlier. Sales of the most popular models were 4,583 in the C-class, 2,781 in the E-class, and 2,362 in the M-class.

The smart USA line of micro-cars sold 1,116 units in June, a decline of 56.2 percent.

Through the end of June, the company's total U.S. sales for 2009 were down 28.3 percent, totaling 93,655.

In itself, yes. But let's not forget that a year ago, we still had the glut of pre-release deliveries.
And, it gives Smartville a chance to fulfill, on top of others, its Chinese orders without pushing production up too much, thereby maintaining its average output without compromising quality... It keeps Hambach's jobs secure, its workers happy, the Suppliers supplying and our brand healthy.
Whereas some other big names are, well, dwindling or dying...
Just an idea, an attempt for a more positive angle to a sagging sales figure.
