Mercedes-Benz USA (MBUSA) today reported August sales of 17,112 vehicles.
Although August volume was slightly off by 7.5 percent versus August 2008,
August sales were MBUSA's strongest so far this year and marked the fourth
month of increasing sales momentum.

The volume leaders for the month were the E-, C-, and M-Class with sales of
4,671, 4,253, and 2,577 respectively. The all-new 9th generation 2010 E-Class
continues to exhibit strong sales performance, topping August 2008 by 74.2%.

On a year-to-date basis, the company sold 118,428 new vehicles, a decrease of
25.3 percent over the comparable period last year.

smart USA recorded 1,622 sales in August 2009, an increase of 14.3% versus
July 2009, and its best month since March of this year and second consecutive
month over month sales increase. Since its introduction in the United States,
there are now over 36,000 smart fortwos traveling the roads throughout
America. The smart fortwo offers the right balance of power, outstanding fuel
efficiency, innovative safety features, environmental friendliness and
excellent value.

Detailed vehicle sales information for MBUSA will be announced later today in
a separate press release issued by Mercedes-Benz USA.

Third highest month of 09, would have been the lowest month of 08.

Cash For Clunkers certainly had a hand in this.

Agreed, but gas is still relatively cheap.
Even with the $/clunker, most are more tempted by "bang for the buck" vehicles than mileage.

(Though we know that smart are pretty good deals in the "bang for the buck" category.)

Smart should kick-it-up a notch with a new forfour model and a new roadster model. An exterior plastics upgrade for the current-gen fortwo might also be prudent.

If smart snoozes, the competition will quickly overtake this current niche model. It's already in the works with serious competition by Toyota and Honda (and a couple of other contenders).

Smart's 450/451, 2-person, Euro-city econo unit has a limited US audience. Smart may may have met the needs of said audience (...or will in the very near future) as new fortwo sales significantly decrease.

MHLO, of course...

Here is what I see. While the # are not good I see a spike durring Cash for clunkers and then a Dip. If I was getting ready to buy a car in September, but had a chance to turn in a clunker I would have purchased it in August.

Only time will tell if thise numbers go back up for October.
