Nothing seems to be negotiable on these things.
499.00 is a dealer fee for getting the car ready and cleaned etc.
This may vary from dealer to dealer. I am not sure if it is set by Smart or the dealers have a say in it.

did that come from your dealer? that sounds suspiciously like dealer mark-up to me. i don't care if it's 49 cents, it's the principle.

yea, have to agree. i'd be on the phone first thing tomorrow morn with SmartUSA to get some info on that. that sounds like a big old scam to me.

OK, so the Smart USA site has the asterik next to the price with the following text below:

* Excluding tax, license, registration, destination charge and options

nowhere in there does it say anything about dealer fees or prep or set-up charges. this is a scam. i knew some dealers would try it. i think everybody on this board needs to start calling smartusa tomorrow and let them know that this won't fly.

I agree, it sounds like one of those sneaky ways dealers mark-up, it is something I look for when buying cars and have avoided dealers that add those kind of excessive paperwork/prep fees. I feel like they see us as sitting targets though, with cars ordered as ours have been where we don't have a choice about what dealer we buy through we are sitting ducks and pretty much stuck with whatever they want to do

Down the line, once we post our experiences, the dealers with mark ups will be obvious as always happens and new buyers will look for the less greedy dealers (for example I ended up going to SoCal to order a Mini from a dealer with no mark-ups or funny fees vs. my local upcharge scamming options; many others went far and wide for the same reason).
