I had a similar thing (although not as bad), happen to me this past weekend.
I was driving north on I-5 from Portland, Oregon when a Ford F350 pick-up past by me. His vehicle was raised exposing all of his tires (without any mud flaps), and wouldn't you know... a rock was kicked up and "SMACK!" Right above my wiper blade (driver's side). It chipped the windshield with radial cracks spreading out from the center.
The good thing is the damaged area was small and could fit under a dime. Called my insurance company and went to Safelite Auto Glass and had it repaired. I couldn't even find the damaged area after they finished.
If I did need to replace my windshield, I'd like to see if I could get it tinted & shaded at the top. However, I would have to check to see if it would interfere with my rain sensor/automatic headlights sensor first.
